Fire Alarms & Detectors

The early warning of a fire can be lifesaving particularly in the home and at night or in the workplace. By installing a fire alarm or detector you are providing more time for orderly evacuation and the opportunity to deal with the fire before it becomes too large.

Know your smoke alarm

There are two common types of smoke alarms for home use. One type is called an Ionization alarm because it monitors "ions" which are electrically charged particles. Smoke particles entering the sensing chamber collide with these ions altering the distribution of ions collected by the sensor. The alarm is triggered when the change in electrical balance reaches a preset level to reduce the incidence of false alarms.

A photoelectric alarm uses a beam of light and a light sensor. Smoke particles entering the chamber deflect some of the light from its normal path which is detected by the light sensor. The alarm is triggered when the smoke density reaches a preset level. Both types of smoke alarm perform effectively provided they are installed and maintained correctly.
