Regular maintenance is essential with safety products such as fire extinguishers. British Standard Code of Practice BS 5306 Part 3 recommends that your fire extinguishers are serviced at least annually to ensure that they will always function in an emergency.
Employers also have a statutory responsibility to ensure that extinguishers within the work place are serviced in line with the standards and regulations to ensure they remain in good working order.
The requirement to provide fire-fighting equipment in buildings is embodied within the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which requires that where necessary:
"a) The premises are, to the extent that it is appropriate, equipped with appropriate fire fighting equipment and
b) Any non-automatic fire-fighting equipment so provided is easily accessible, simple to use and indicated by signs."
If your extinguishers are not already covered by a service and maintenance agreement you are advised to arrange cover with a local BAFE FIA BBFC or IFEDA registered service and maintenance engineer. Contact details can be found on our links page
