More on fitting loft insulation

As an addendum to my experience of installing loft insulation I was asked how I managed not to put my foot through the ceiling. A good point as it is a precarious job tip toeing from one ceiling joist to another. My house is nearly 30 years old so the joist width is reasonable but on modern constructions they are an inch or so narrower.
Either way you are better to take a couple of boards or planks into the loft that you can use to span the joists. For safety you need a length that will span at least 3 joists and a width that allows you to kneel comfortably. A pair of knee pads also comes in handy.
