How a Plant Nappy Works

The Plant Nappy is a secondary container that catches leaks or spills from oils, fuels and other contaminants. It is typically placed under plants and machinery or can be used as a tray when refuelling equipment or decanting liquids. The Plant Nappy’s composition allows it to absorb oil or fuel while filtering out water and letting it flow out through the side walls.

A Plant Nappy has four main components: the side walls, liners, internal base and base layer. Each element contributes to the absorption of oils, helping to protect the environment from harm. For example,

  • Side Walls: The side walls are made from reticulated foam, which acts as an additional filter, removing any excess contaminants or oil residue from the water. This leaves you with clean water that contains less than 3.4 ppm of contaminants. The clean water then flows out of the side walls and into the environment.
  • Liners: Plant Nappy liners are removable sheets that can be placed into the Plant Nappy to increase capacity. Once used, the liner can be removed, cleaned and put back into the Plant Nappy.
  • Internal Base: This layer is made from the same material as the Plant Nappy liners and works to trap oil and fuel. Any harmful chemicals are contained in one place and absorbed so this liquid cannot spill.
  • Base Layer: This non-permeable layer acts as a barrier between the contaminants and the environment, stopping any harmful substances from escaping.

  • Now you understand the inner workings of a Plant Nappy, let’s delve into how these components work to protect the environment and your site!

    1. Prevents Pollution

Oil and fuel can be extremely harmful substances to the environment. These contaminants can reach water sources and affect the soil, which can have knock-on effects on the environment as a whole. This is where the Plant Nappy comes in.

The Plant Nappy not only absorbs oil and fuel from machinery but also catches any rainwater that may come in contact with the contaminants and filters out the water before it is released back into the environment. This reduces the amount of contaminants that reach the environment, stopping the pollution of lakes, rivers and the ground.

    2. Water Conservation

One of the easiest ways oils and fuel can reach the environment is through water. Water can act as a vessel for contaminants to travel through, making it easy for these substances to spread into lakes and rivers.

A Plant Nappy reduces this risk by filtering out any rainwater that comes into contact with the contaminants before it is re-released into the environment. Additionally, the inner layer and any liners work to trap the contaminants within that layer, meaning most of the oil and fuel are absorbed before they can be carried away by any water.

    3. Safeguards Wildlife

It is not only the environment that can be affected by harmful substances but also wildlife. Water sources and any areas of ground that contain oils and fuels can be dangerous for animals and plants which can lead to the biodiversity of an area being completely destroyed. To help protect wildlife, the Plant Nappy quickly absorbs and traps any contaminants before they reach the environment, ensuring the area surrounding the worksite is protected.

    4. Protects Soil

Maintaining soil health is crucial to ensuring the area can support plant life. Any contaminants that reach the ground could otherwise degrade the soil, affecting the area's ecosystem. To make sure you are respecting your work environment, you should always use a Plant Nappy when using any machinery or refuelling equipment. Any oil or fuel leaks could otherwise cause soil pollution and soil erosion.

    5. Reduces Unnecessary Waste

Plant Nappies have been designed with longevity and durability in mind. With all the hazards of a site, a Plant Nappy must be able to withstand numerous dangers, including vehicles, sharp objects and more. This is why the Plant Nappy has been made with materials that are:

    • Abrasion Resistant
    • Oil Resistant
    • Chemical Resistant
    • UV Resistant
    • Fire Retardant
    • Crush Resistant

This ensures the Plant Nappy can handle anything you throw at it and still work effectively, reducing the need to replace them frequently. You can also reuse a Plant Nappy as long as you clean it in between uses. Plus, you can add a Plant Nappy liner to increase the longevity of the product.

    6. Increases Staff Safety

Sites are environments full of hazards. To eliminate one of these, you could implement a Plant Nappy. If you are not careful, oil and fuel spills can go unnoticed, leading to slips and accidents. By placing a Plant Nappy underneath any machinery or tools, you can reduce the chance of spills and accidents due to spillages.

    7. Ensure Regulatory Compliance

As a business, you have a duty to provide a safe working environment for your employees and protect the environment from any harm. With a Plant Nappy, you can ensure spills are captured before they end up on the floor, minimising the risk of accidents and preventing environmental pollution. This means you can not only safeguard your staff and do your part to protect the environment but you will also avoid any fines and penalties as a business.

    FAQs

What materials are plant nappies made from?

The top layers of a Plant Nappy are made from permeable materials that allow water through while trapping oil and fuel. On the other hand, the base of a Plant Nappy is made from a woven Olefin fabric coated with Olefin resin. This non-permeable fabric prevents oil and fuel from entering the environment, creating an effective barrier between the two.

    Are Plant Nappies reusable?

Yes! Plant Nappies can be used again and again. All you need to do is ensure the Plant Nappy or liner is cleaned and dried in between uses. You can do this by either squeezing out oil from a Plant Nappy liner or pressure washing it in a controlled environment.

Are there different sizes of Plant Nappies?

At Fire & Safety Centre, we offer three different sizes of the Plant Nappy. Choose from small, medium or large to suit your needs. Small Plant Nappies are generally used for small water pumps or to catch any spills from refuelling equipment. Medium Plant Nappies are the most popular as they can handle spills from most machinery. Finally, Large Plant Nappies can catch leaks or spills from larger pieces of equipment such as generators or even vehicles.
